The most important red grape varieties in Piemonte are Barbera, Dolcetto, and Nebbiolo.

Barbera generally produces wines that are light to medium in style, easy to drink and with good acidity, although there are a few exceptions of unique full bodied wines. Dolcetto wines are for the most part lighter and more fruit driven.

Nebbiolo is responsible for the production of some of the bigger wines in the world, Barolos and Barbarescos. Although also from the same grape often other lighter styles are produced Gattinara, Nebbiolo D’Alba, Ghemme, etc.

*Barolo and Barbaresco are made entirely from the local, native nebbiolo grape from the langhe hills of Piemonte.

They are robust reds, very dry, full bodied and high in tannin, acidity, and alcohol. Their aromas suggest tar, violets, roses, wild berries, leather, tobacco, coffee, and sometimes truffles. Barolo is the more full body of the two and usually requires a bit more aging. It is said that when it comes to Barolos, you drink the vineyard as supposed to the producer. In fact, in Burgundy, each Barolos produced in different vineyard may have its own distinct personality.
