Brunello di Montalcino is produced in the fortress town of Montalcino, south of the Chianti zone, and is today considered one of the greatest, long lived red wines in existence. Brunellos are made from one grape only, Sangiovese Grosso clone of Sangiovese and can be aged in different type of oaks.

Generally speaking Brunellos are described as "bigger as and blacker" than Chiantis and Vino Nobiles although one can identify some different styles within the Brunellos. The ones produced in the north of Montalcino tend to be more perfumed and elegant wines, while the ones produced in the south are denser fuller bodied with less acidity.
