The Pinot Grigio grape, a variety with dusky purple skin and white flesh, was the result of a genetic color mutation of Pinot Nero, or Pinot Noir, variety. Like its relative, the Pinot Grigio may be vinified as a pale rose (but not as a red) wine if left in brief contact with the skins during fermentation.
Pinot Grigio is commonly planted in Italy in regions such as Friuli, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Veneto, and its common characteristic is that of light, refreshing, and crisp. However, in some cases Pinot Grigio from specifically areas such as Collio in Friuli can be powerful, mineral, and full in body.
